“Without stones there is no arch.” – Marco Polo

Avignon was the most important city in Europe in the 14th century. Today, it is the seat of the Catholic church and Palais des Papes is the largest Gothic building in the world. It is also now a UNESCO site.
This is for Lens Artist Photo Challenge featuring the letter A for Arch, for Alleyways and for Avignon
There are a lot of arches on the towers at the Popes’ Palace / Palais des Papes, Avignon, France
Please click image to enlarge.

The interiors are decorated with tapestries, frescoes, paintings, statues and wooden ceilings.

It has cobblestone alleyways that are beautiful, colourful and relatively quiet.

A for “awesome.” Great photos of Avignon and response to the challenge. 👍🏻
Interesting alleyway umbrella cover.

A for autobiography (I couldn’t find a decent synonym for “memories” with a). Thanks for sharing.

We spent a day in Avignon during our trip to Provence several years ago. It is a truly Amazing place and you’ve captured it beautifully Teresa. It really made me realize the grandeur of some of the Catholic venues although it can’t have been very comfortable behind those stone walls! Love that you focused on the arches too. Excellent choice.

I featured just one photo of its arch the last week so I thought, why not feature all the other arches that I found. Yes, we didn’t stay long there too…another day or two would have helped in knowing the place more. Thanks Tina!

Ah – Avignon! So beautifully captured, making my memories come back from 1976 when I and my boyfriend drove for 33 days through the whole of France. Pont d’Avignon I remember clearly too. The city center is very beautiful. Thank you for chosing this for A! Love the umbrella lane too!
